Chapter 36

My admission left me feeling vulnerable, and rocked to my core.

I had neither of the two things that would make me the happiest in my life. Frankly, now that Degarr had forced me to look at my life, I realized how empty it was. My whole life consisted of going to work and going home, with brief periods of feeding splashed in because my body required it.

Six months ago I would have told you that my life was fun.

Two months ago I would have growled at you to get out of my way. Aleric had been in town by then, and I was becoming immersed in the investigation.

Work-sleep-feed-work.

That was my life.

And it was shockingly empty.

Fuck.

I followed Degarr back into the hotel suite, and tried to force my mind to focus on the present, instead of my sorry life.

We found Nadia in the kitchen, and Jamie and Owen on the other side of the counter. Nadia turned as we walked in, a radiant smile on her face.

“I found him,” Nadia said. “I found Cillian.”

“Of course you did.” Degarr smiled, his hands going to her waist as he kissed her cheek. “You’re the best.”

She beamed at him.

She was Degarr’s human, and vampires usually didn’t get jealous over a vampire lover’s human, but after the night Degarr and I had just had, I found myself checking my emotions. To my relief, I didn’t feel any jealousy towards her. Maybe it was because she was female. Or because she was human. I couldn’t be either of those things for him, after all.

Or maybe it was because of the look on his face. The love and happiness I saw in him, when he looked at her. I wanted that for him. I wanted him to be happy, as much as I wanted his heart to always beat.

She smiled as he released her.

“Where?” he asked.

“A mansion on the east side of the city,” she answered.

“Address?” I prompted.

“256 Hillside Drive.”

“That’s Aleric’s place,” I said, joining Jamie and Owen on the other side of the counter.

“We figured as much,” Jamie said. “It’s practically a fortress. There’s a high wall around the whole property, and only one gate. Guards walk the entire thing every half hour, and there’s always a couple of guards at the gate.”

“Did they see you?” Degarr asked.

“Of course not.” Jamie frowned.

“Not doubting you. Just had to ask,” Degarr replied.

The ginger’s expression eased.

“What was the package?” Owen asked.

“This.” I pulled the jewelry box from my pocket and set it on the counter.

“You’re engaged?” Owen’s eyes bounced from me to Degarr and back again.

“No. Oddly enough, you’re close though.” I cracked open the box and held up the vial of blood. “This is from Aleric.”

“That’s a creepy ring,” Jamie said.

“Worse. We’re pretty sure this is Cillian’s blood,” I said.

“Fuck!” Owen swore.

“He’s alive, Owen.” I reassured him.

“That’s good, but,” he ran a hand over his mouth, “how do I tell Ryan Kelly that his son’s being held captive by vampires? That they’re giving out his blood as gifts?”

“You don’t,” Degarr replied.
